The Met Gala is one of the biggest fashion red carpets of the entire year. For those of you who don't know the Met Gala, also called the Met Ball, is an annual fundraiser held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City for their costume institute. This is also when the costume institutes annual exhibition opens. Anna Wintour the editor and chief of Vogue is the chair women of the event, which each year has a different theme. This year theme was "
White Tie and Decorations" and was honoring the american couturier Charles James. I'll be sharing with you the biggest trend of the night, my three favorite looks, and my three least favorite.
The Biggest Trend of the Night: Ball gowns
Hailee Steinfeld in Prabal Gurung |
Katie Homes in Marchesa |
Sara Jessica Parker in Oscar de la Renta |
My three favorite: The thing that makes each of these three women look so spectacular is the fact that they are each able to hold on to their own personal aesthetic while still dressing for the theme of the night.
Shailene Woodley in Rodarte |
Leighton Meester in Michael Kors |
Emma Stone in Thakoon |
My Three Least Favorite: Lets start off with Lupita, I wanted to love this look, I stared at it for quite a while trying to decide between loving it or hating it, and unfortunately decided the latter. There is just so much going on here, the feathers, the jewels, the net, the dress under the net, its just too much. I also didn't like that she took such a literal approach to the classic fashion feel the night had, by dressing identical to a 1920's flapper. Either way though Lupita took a risk and deserves to be applauded for doing so. Kate Upton is one of the most beautiful girls, so to she her in such a confusing look tonight was disappointing. The dress is just not attractive, it makes no sense to have the nude sections around her lady parts and black paneling at her stomach, and then the flower crown is completely out of place. Flower crowns you can MAYBE get away with at a music festival, but for sure not on the red carpet, and finally the random necklace that goes with neither. Truth be told though, she would look perfect wearing a paper sack. Finally is Cara Devevingne, Karl Lagerfeld of Chanels muse. She looks great, her outfit is fine, but thats just it, its fine. She doesn't look nearly formal enough for the event, when you have Karl Lagerfeld on speed dial, as well as a few other top notch designers, there is no excuse for not coming out in a stunning gown.
